## Synopsis

Kir Royal (1986) is a German satirical comedy-drama miniseries created by Helmut Dietl for Das Erste. This limited series runs six hour-long episodes and parodies a Munich newspaper and the glittering, self-regarding social circuit it covers. Franz Xaver Kroetz plays gossip reporter Baby Schimmerlos, a tabloid writer who moves through the Schicki-Micki party scene while chasing stories about its wealthy and vain figures. Senta Berger appears as Mona, and Dieter Hildebrandt plays photographer Herbie Fried, while Ruth-Maria Kubitschek portrays Friederike von Unruh within the newspaper's orbit. The engine is the reporter's constant pursuit of access and scandal, with each episode built around a new social event, a new rivalry, and the compromises that come with writing about people who depend on publicity. The tone is sardonic and observant, mixing biting media satire with wry affection for its characters and an atmosphere of champagne-lit vanity. Set in 1980s Munich, the show suits viewers who enjoy sharp European social satire. Fans of Absolutely Fabulous, The Day Today, and Schtonk! will find resonance in its mockery of image-driven celebrity culture.
