## Synopsis

NewsRadio (1995-1999) is a US NBC sitcom created by Paul Simms, a five-season workplace comedy running for 97 episodes of roughly 25 minutes each. Set at WNYX, New York's number two news radio station, the show follows the staff whose ambitions keep colliding with the station's chronic mediocrity. Dave Foley plays the earnest anchor Dave Nelson, Maura Tierney is the sharp-tongued Lisa Miller, and Phil Hartman stars as the self-important Bill McNeal, with Stephen Root as the jittery Jimmy James and Andy Dick as the reckless Matthew Brock. Each episode is built from the small humiliations and petty rivalries of a cramped newsroom, where a lost assignment, a bad on-air mistake or a scheme to climb the ladder can drive an entire half hour. The tone is breezy, quick-witted and absurd, with ensemble banter doing most of the work. Fans of 30 Rock, The Office and Murphy Brown will find similar pleasures in its workplace satire and sharp ensemble timing. Its episodic format means each story stands alone, while the running office tensions give the series a comfortable, lived-in rhythm across its run.
