## Synopsis

The Winds of War (1983) is an American historical miniseries created by Dan Curtis for ABC, a seven-episode prestige television event built as a sweeping family saga. Robert Mitchum plays career naval officer Victor 'Pug' Henry, whose domestic life with his family, portrayed by Ali MacGraw, Jan-Michael Vincent and Polly Bergen, becomes entangled with the political and military maneuvering of the late 1930s. Alongside the Henrys runs the story of the Jastrow family, with John Houseman and Chaim Topol, whose fortunes are drawn into the gathering catastrophe in Europe. The engine of the series is the tension between private loyalty and public duty, as each character tries to protect what they love while the wider world slides toward conflict. Each episode builds a patient, grounded picture of diplomacy, wartime anxiety and everyday life, rather than battle spectacle. The result is a measured, melancholic and reflective register, with a sense of dread growing steadily toward the attack on Pearl Harbor. Set across 1930s and early 1940s locations including Washington and Europe, it is a one-season limited run that fans of War and Remembrance and Shogun will find resonance with, particularly for its multi-generational scale and historical sweep.
