## Synopsis

Mysterious Girlfriend X (2012) is a Japanese anime romantic comedy series produced for TOKYO MX and based on a manga. Akira Tsubaki is an ordinary high school boy whose life tilts when he impulsively licks drool left behind by the mysterious transfer student Mikoto Urabe (Ayako Yoshitani). Days later he is struck by a fever that only she can cure, and she explains it is a case of love sickness: her saliva carries emotions, and the two are now bound together. Voiced by Miyu Irino as Akira, the show follows the awkward, escalating entanglement as Akira's friend Kouhei Ueno (Yuki Kaji) and other classmates react to the strange couple. The engine is simple and absurd: each episode turns a new physical oddity into a test of the relationship and of Akira's nerve. Its single season of thirteen half-hour episodes keeps a light, breezy rhythm, leaning on flustered teen embarrassment, playful fan-service sexual tension and a quirky supernatural conceit. Set in a contemporary Japanese high school, it has the sweetness and awkwardness of a school romance with a stranger edge. Fans of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai will find resonance in its teen romantic comedy shape and its supernatural hook.
