## What critics say

Viewers broadly regard Slam Dunk as an acclaimed sports anime whose energetic basketball matches and underdog growth make it a genre benchmark.

## Synopsis

Slam Dunk follows Hanamichi Sakuragi, a hot-headed former delinquent whose height and fists earn him attention, but whose real motive for joining his high school basketball team is a crush on a classmate named Haruko. Teammates and rivals initially mock and resent him, and his boasting and brawls are played for laughs, yet the series steadily shows how relentless effort, humility, and friendship turn raw physicality into genuine skill. The tone balances slapstick comedy with earnest sincerity, so games feel tense and exhilarating while quieter moments of loyalty, rivalry, and self-doubt give the cast emotional weight. Rukawa, a cool and gifted ace, becomes a central foil whose quiet competitiveness pushes Sakuragi to improve. The basketball matches are energetic and kinetic, with each game serving as a test of character as much as athletic ability. Warm and uplifting at its core, the show balances humor with the bittersweet pressure of competition, the sting of losing, and the hope that hard work can change who you become. Its appeal lies in the joy of watching an underdog find his footing among people who slowly become his family.
