## Synopsis

Angel Beats! (2010) is a Japanese animated comedy-drama series produced by P.A.WORKS and aired on CBC in Japan, a single-season anime of thirteen episodes. The protagonist is Otonashi (voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya), a boy who wakes in an afterlife high school with no memory of how he died. He is recruited by Yuri (voiced by Harumi Sakurai), who leads the Afterlife Battlefront, a band of students waging guerrilla war against God. Their main opponent is the student council president Angel, voiced by Kana Hanazawa, a girl with supernatural powers. The engine of the series is Otonashi's search for his past, woven through episodes of playful school antics, mock battles and gunfights, and the gradually revealed backstories of each student. The show moves from light, goofy comedy into heavy emotional drama, with a tone that is wistful, bittersweet and cathartic. Its afterlife school is a melancholy, sun-washed campus where friendship becomes the only certainty. Viewers who enjoy Clannad: After Story and Toradora! will find resonance in its blend of teenage warmth and grief, and its mix of comedy and tragedy.
