## Synopsis

Kaiji (2007-2011) is a Japanese seinen anime series produced by Madhouse for Nippon TV, adapted from the manga and running two seasons across fifty-two episodes. Kaiji Itou, a jobless drifter who spends his days drinking and stealing hubcaps, is tricked by a former co-worker into assuming a huge debt. Offered a shady way to repay it, he is pulled into an illegal underground gambling tournament aboard a cruise ship, where each episode becomes a tense psychological duel of bluffing, cheating, and calculation. Narrator Fumihiko Tachiki frames the action while Masato Hagiwara voices Kaiji through every round, and rivals such as Tonegawa and Endo, voiced by Hakuryu and Naoya Uchida, push him into fresh schemes. The engine is simple and brutal: Kaiji wants to escape debt, and every game gives the house an opportunity to cheat him. Structured as a sequence of escalating contests in one closed setting, the series builds a claustrophobic, suspenseful mood that rewards close attention. Its tone is grim, sweaty, and cynical, with a bleak view of class and desperation. Fans of Liar Game and Death Note will find resonance in its clever gamesmanship and morally compromised stakes.
