## Synopsis

Birdsong (2012) is a British two-part limited series created for BBC One, adapted from Sebastian Faulks' novel. Eddie Redmayne plays English tunneling officer Stephen Wraysford, whose forbidden affair with a married French woman, Isabelle Azaire (Clémence Poésy), lingers in his mind as he fights through the mud and horror of the First World War trenches. Matthew Goode and Richard Madden appear among the officers around him, and Joseph Mawle plays a sergeant whose grim discipline keeps the men alive. The engine of the story is the tension between Stephen's longing for a love that cannot exist in wartime and the brutal daily reality of trench life, where survival depends on luck and mud. Its two long episodes alternate between the prewar romance in France and the grinding front, building a sorrowful, hauntingly intimate register. Its tone is melancholic and elegiac, with flashes of violence and wartime dread. Fans of Atonement, Band of Brothers and Downton Abbey will find resonance in its literary romance, its war realism and its period atmosphere. The result is a heartfelt, sombre piece of historical drama about memory, loss and the cost of love against industrial slaughter.
