## Synopsis

Braunschlag (2012) is an Austrian national-television black comedy miniseries created for ORF 1. Robert Palfrader plays Mayor Gerhard Tschach, who, facing bankruptcy in a small provincial town, decides to fake a Marian apparition to rescue the local economy. Maria Hofstätter plays his wife Herta, while Nicholas Ofczarek and Nina Proll play Richard and Elfie Pfeisinger, a disco owner and his wife whose own interests collide with the mayor's scheme. Manuel Rubey appears as Banyardi, an apostolic visitor whose arrival raises the stakes. The engine of the eight-episode run is the escalating web of lies, bribes and opportunism that spreads as the miracle is staged, with local politicians, church figures and business people each trying to profit. Each episode pushes the deception further, building a farce around greed, corruption and the hypocrisy of religious institutions. Set in a provincial Austrian town in the present day, it is a caustic, boisterous and sharply observed satire, with drinking and crude humour driving much of the chaos. Fans of Fargo, Kaos and Father Ted will find resonance in its dark comic tone and its skewering of small town power.
