## Synopsis

The Kingdom (1994-2022) is a Danish television supernatural horror comedy series created by Lars von Trier for DR1 and Viaplay. Set in Copenhagen's gleaming and technologically advanced Kingdom hospital, the story follows a staff built around faith in medical science as uncanny events begin to erode their certainties. A phantom ambulance pulls in each night and vanishes, voices echo in the elevator shaft, and a pregnant doctor's fetus develops far faster than nature allows. Ernst-Hugo Järegård, Kirsten Rolffes, Holger Juul Hansen and Søren Pilmark anchor the ensemble, with Ghita Nørby and Birgitte Raaberg among its key women. The show unfolds across three seasons of mostly short episodes that mix workplace bureaucracy with mysterious occult threads, a pattern that rewards attentive viewing. Its tone shifts between absurdist comedy, unsettling dread and bleak institutional satire, with a handheld, deliberately uneven look that favors the grotesque and the surreal. Fans of Twin Peaks, The X-Files and Hannibal will find resonance in its blend of eerie mystery and deadpan humor, and anyone craving a cult Scandinavian oddity will feel at home here.
