## Synopsis

Ikkyu-san (1975-1982) is a Japanese animated comedy series produced by Toei Animation and broadcast on NET. Following the mischievous young monk Ikkyu (voiced by Toshiko Fujita) during his stay at Ankoku Temple, the show builds each of its 296 half-hour episodes around a fresh problem brought to the temple gates. Distraught farmers, greedy merchants and quarrelsome townsfolk arrive with troubles, and Ikkyu relies on intelligence and quick wit to untangle them, often turning a foolish scheme back on the person who devised it. Alongside the young monk, the temple's senior priests and the local cast give the stories a warm community texture. The engine is simple and episodic: each installment is self-contained, so viewers can dip in at any point. The result is a gentle, sunny register of playful humor and wholesome moral lessons, set in a feudal Japanese countryside of the Muromachi period. Fans of Doraemon, Sazae-san and Dororo will find a similar blend of child-led cleverness, historical charm and family-friendly warmth in this long-running classic.
