## What critics say

Reviewers broadly agree the series has a gripping, bold dark premise and striking intensity, but its uneven tone and rough animation divide viewers.

## Synopsis

Devilman is a bleak, lurid horror-action series about Akira Fudo, an ordinary teenager who fuses with a demon to fight the monsters secretly hiding among humanity. Its tone swings between grisly carnage, operatic melodrama and an unsettling sense that human cruelty may be as dangerous as any devil. Friendship with his classmate Ryo and loyalty to Miki give the story its emotional stakes, and every victory feels costly. The animation is rough and lurid, with gore, nudity and sudden shocks that lean into body horror and disturbing imagery. Viewers drawn to apocalyptic dread, moral ambiguity and cult horror will find a series that refuses comfort. Its episodes escalate steadily toward a grim, sweeping reckoning, with the characters' humanity tested at every turn. Watch it for an uncompromising mix of pulpy spectacle and philosophical despair, rather than gentle heroism or easy catharsis. The result feels more like a fever dream than a conventional action show, and it lingers long after the final episode.
