## Synopsis

Eight Is Enough (1977-1981) is an American family comedy-drama created by Lee Mendelson for ABC. Dick Van Patten plays Tom Bradford, a newspaper columnist raising a large household, and Betty Buckley plays Abby Bradford, the stepmother who anchors the home alongside him. Their children, including David (Grant Goodeve), Tommy (Willie Aames), Nancy (Dianne Kay), Nicholas (Adam Rich), and Susan (Susan Richardson), supply the everyday turmoil that drives each episode: schoolyard rivalries, first crushes, money worries, and the friction of sharing one crowded house. The show runs as a series of largely self-contained hour-long episodes, with a family problem introduced, complicated, and resolved through patient conversation at the dinner table. Across five seasons it stays focused on the warmth of the household rather than on any larger plot. Its tone is gentle, sincere, and comforting, with light humor and earnest moral lessons in the vein of The Waltons and The Brady Bunch. Fans of wholesome 1970s family television will find the same cozy, lesson-driven charm here, set in an unhurried American suburban home that feels like a snapshot of its era.
