## Synopsis

UFO Robot Grendizer (1975-1977) is a Japanese animated super robot series created by Go Nagai for Fuji TV, produced by Toei Animation. Duke Fleed, a survivor of the Vega Star raised on Earth as Daisuke Umon by the kindly Dr. Umon (voiced by Joji Yanami in his dual role), discovers that King Vega and his army intend to conquer the planet. Alongside his friends Koji Kabuto (Hiroya Ishimaru) and Hikaru Makiba (Chiyoko Kawashima), and later his younger sister Maria (Rihoko Yoshida), Duke pilots the mighty Grendizer to repel each new invasion. The engine of the series is a steady stream of monstrous robots and enemy schemes, with each episode built around a fresh threat and a spectacular robot battle. Across seventy-four episodes in a single season, the story keeps a bright, heroic energy, blending rousing action, camaraderie and earnest optimism. Set in a contemporary Earth threatened by an alien empire, it has the colorful, larger-than-life flavor of classic Japanese mecha. Fans of Mazinger Z, Getter Robo and Voltron will find resonance in its giant robots and defend-the-planet spirit.
