## Synopsis

Hellfjord (2012) is a Norwegian dark comedy miniseries created by Tommy Wirkola for NRK1. Across seven half-hour episodes it follows urban police officer Salmander (Zahid Ali), a second generation Pakistani immigrant who is shipped to Hellfjord, the northernmost village in Norway, after an accidental mishap that leaves his police horse dead in front of a crowd of children. Hellfjord is a remote village of simple, insular people who prefer to keep to themselves, and Salmander's outsider's eye is the engine of the show: as he scratches the surface of daily village life, he uncovers a secret that threatens to turn the community upside down. Supporting turns from Stig Frode Henriksen as Kobba, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal as Johanne and Thomas Hanzon as Bosse Nova give the ensemble its eccentric texture. The series plays out in a bleak, snowbound northern setting with a deadpan, gleefully vulgar comedy register, black humor and a streak of absurdity. Its outsider-in-a-hostile-town premise and grim provincial sense of humor will appeal to viewers who enjoy Fargo and the offbeat small town mysteries of Twin Peaks, and anyone who likes crude, offbeat Scandinavian comedy.
