## What critics say

Critics broadly regard the miniseries as an ambitious, well-acted portrait of ordinary Germans during the Second World War, though some question its historical framing and perspective.

## Synopsis

Generation War is a German three-part historical miniseries created by Philipp Kadelbach for ZDF. Career soldier Wilhelm Winter and his pacifist younger brother Friedhelm head off to war in summer 1941 after farewelling their friends Charlotte, Viktor and Greta in Berlin, all promising to reunite once the fighting ends. That promise becomes the emotional engine of the story as the war pulls the five friends across the Eastern Front, the home city and occupied lands. Each episode follows their divergent paths, tracking how loyalty, ambition and conscience are tested by the choices the era forces on them. The tone is sombre and harrowing, with moments of tenderness between the friends that make the cost of every compromise feel personal. Its sweep resembles a prestige war epic, but its focus stays intimate, asking ordinary people how far they will bend before they break. Fans of Band of Brothers, Downfall and Babylon Berlin will recognise its blend of intimate personal stakes and large-scale historical catastrophe, delivered with a grave, elegiac register.
