## Synopsis

Midnight Diner (2009-2014) is a Japanese slice of life drama series created for TBS and MBS. Set in a small restaurant tucked into a Tokyo shopping district, the eatery opens only after midnight and offers a single standing menu choice, yet its taciturn proprietor, known simply as Master (Kaoru Kobayashi), will cook almost any dish a customer asks for. Across three seasons of thirty half hour episodes, the narrative follows the regulars who wander in during the small hours: a yakuza, an unsuccessful actor, a group of office ladies, a newspaper delivery boy and a stripper. Each episode is built around a patron's request and the personal story that surrounds it, so the engine is simply the quiet exchange between a dish and a confession. The mood is wistful, intimate and gently comforting, with an undercurrent of urban loneliness and unrequited love. Set in the nightlife of present day Tokyo, it has the episodic warmth of a food show crossed with the human portraiture of an anthology of small lives. Fans of Kodoku no Gourmet and Bob's Burgers will find resonance in its food-centered intimacy and ensemble of regulars.
