## Synopsis

Murder in the Heartland (1993) is a United States television miniseries created for ABC, a two-part true crime drama adapted from real events. Tim Roth plays Charles Starkweather, a nineteen-year-old who goes on a killing spree across Nebraska in 1957 and 1958, with Fairuza Balk as his fourteen-year-old girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate. Brian Dennehy as John McArthur and Randy Quaid as Elmer Scheele anchor the investigation and the community around the crimes, while Kate Reid as Pansy Street and Roberts Blossom as Gus add the texture of ordinary small town life. The engine of the story is the slow unraveling of a restless young couple's road trip into violence, told through the grind of rural police work and the terror spreading through farm towns. Its episodes are built around the escalating incidents and the manhunt that follows them, moving steadily toward the realization of how far the pair have gone. The series is a single two-episode event, each part running close to ninety minutes, and it carries the bleak, unsparing register of a documentary-minded drama. Its tone is grim, quiet and unsettling, with long stretches of dread set against the dusty plains and flat highways of the American heartland. Fans of Badlands, In Cold Blood and Zodiac will find resonance in its portrait of violence born from ordinary places.
