## Synopsis

Another World (1964-1999) is an American daytime soap opera created by William J. Bell and Irna Phillips for NBC. Running for thirty-five years and across 1777 episodes, it unfolds in the fictional town of Bay City, where its storylines follow sprawling households whose loyalties clash along lines of wealth, class and conflicting philosophies. Rather than focusing mainly on everyday domestic routine, the serial leans into exotic melodrama, with characters such as Amanda Cory (Christine Tucci), Ian Rain (Julian McMahon) and Patricia Kirkland (Janine Turner) pursuing romance, status and reconciliation while obstacles pile up between rival families. The engine of the show is its ever-expanding web of relationships, in which marriages, secrets and feuds are stretched across months and years. Each episode is an hour-long installment that keeps threads open rather than resolving them. Its early years carried a distinctive epigram about living in a thousand other worlds, and that emphasis on feeling and dreams gives the series a wistful, heightened register. Fans of General Hospital, The Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives will find a familiar kinship in its serialized emotional intensity. The series was canceled with its story unfinished, closing in 1999 after decades on air.
