## Synopsis

Raines (2007) is a US network crime drama series created by Graham Yost for NBC. Jeff Goldblum stars as Michael Raines, a mentally haunted LAPD detective who sees imaginary manifestations of dead crime victims and uses their visits to crack cases. Matt Craven plays his police captain Dan Lewis, while Madeleine Stowe appears as Dr. Samantha Kohl and Malik Yoba as Charlie Lincoln, adding pressure from both the department and his own fragile mental state. The engine of the show is Raines's unintentional method: each case begins with a haunting he cannot fully explain, and every bit of help from the dead costs him standing with coworkers and strain at home. The series runs for a single season of seven hour-long episodes, built around a case of the week in which the victims' voices drive each investigation. Set in contemporary Los Angeles, it combines the grit of a police procedural with the uneasy atmosphere of a private supernatural mystery. Its tone is brooding and intimate, with the uncanny kept confined to Raines's perception and the everyday city kept stark and grounded. Fans of Medium and Monk will find resonance in its blend of crime investigation and an unconventional protagonist.
