## Synopsis

ER (1994-2009) is an American NBC medical drama created by Michael Crichton, running fifteen seasons and 331 episodes. Set in the overburdened emergency room of an urban Chicago teaching hospital, it follows dedicated physicians including idealistic attending Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards), Croatian-born doctor Luka Kovač (Goran Višnjić), and nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies), with George Clooney's Doug Ross as a charismatic early presence. Their engine is simple and relentless: each shift brings a flood of trauma, accidents and sudden illness, and the staff must make fast decisions while balancing exhaustion and private lives. Episodes are largely self-contained cases threaded through season-long personal arcs, building a serialized record of residents growing into seasoned physicians. The tone shifts from gritty, kinetic realism in the early years toward more melodramatic territory later on, with a sober, humane register throughout. Fans of Grey's Anatomy, St. Elsewhere and Chicago Hope will find resonance in its blend of medical urgency and workplace intimacy. Set in present-day Chicago during its broadcast run, the show remains a defining example of 1990s prestige network drama.
