## Synopsis

Ugly Betty (2006-2010) is an American workplace comedy-drama series created by Silvio Horta for ABC, adapted with the telenovela tradition in mind. Its protagonist, Betty Suarez (America Ferrera), is a smart, earnest aspiring writer from Queens who lands a job as assistant to Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius), the son of publishing mogul Bradford Meade (Alan Dale), at the fashion magazine Mode in Manhattan. Her engine is simple and relentless: she wants to prove that sincerity and hard work can outlast the image-obsessed culture around her, while the magazine's ruthless editor Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams) and a rotating cast of rivals, romances and office politics stand in her way. Each episode is built from workplace schemes, cover-story crises and tangled romantic triangles, with her father Ignacio (Tony Plana) and sister Hilda (Ana Ortiz) anchoring her life back in Queens. Across four seasons the story stays a continuing, heavily serialized arc rather than a case-of-the-week format, and it sits within the network's broader tradition of glossy comedy-drama. The tone is warm, breezy and campy, with a sincere heart beneath its melodrama and a strong celebration of self-acceptance. Fans of The Devil Wears Prada, Jane the Virgin and The Office will find resonance in its blend of satire, romance and underdog optimism.
