## Synopsis

The Grand Mansion Gate (2001-2003) is a Chinese national-television period drama series created by Guo Baochang for CCTV-1. Spanning two seasons and 72 forty-five-minute episodes, it follows a prominent merchant family whose members are both doctors and pharmacists practicing traditional Chinese medicine. Chen Baoguo plays the central patriarch Bai Jingqi, whose household includes the matriarch played by Siqin Gaowa, the family's brothers portrayed by Du Yulu, Li Hongtao, Bi Yanjun and Liu Peiqi, and the servant Li Xiangxiu played by Jiang Shan. The engine of the series is the daily struggle to keep a large, quarrelsome upper-class household and its medicine business intact while the old order weakens. Episodes are built from family conflicts, business rivalries, and servants' intrigues, unfolding across more than a generation as the story moves through the waning years of the Qing dynasty. Foreign missionaries and imperial pressure press in from outside the walls, shaping the household's choices. The tone is measured and warm, with a reflective, sweeping atmosphere that balances intimate domestic drama against historical upheaval. Its tapestry of loyalty, class, and tradition will appeal to fans of Downton Abbey and other sprawling period family sagas, and viewers drawn to historical dramas about medicine and dynastic decline will find it resonant.
