## Synopsis

The Vow (2020-2022) is an American true crime documentary docuseries produced for HBO. Across two seasons and fifteen episodes of roughly fifty-six minutes each, it follows people deeply involved in the self-improvement group NXIVM, interviewing insiders, former members and those who later spoke out as the organization faced charges including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. Former members Sarah Edmondson, Mark Vicente, Catherine Oxenberg and Anthony Ames appear as Self, alongside Keith Raniere, the leader at the center of the case, whose charismatic pull on his followers gives the series its engine. Rather than a single case-of-the-week format, the docuseries builds a long, serialized accounting of how devotion turned into coercion, with testimony layered over archival material and the slow accumulation of legal consequences. The mood is sober, intimate and often harrowing, driven by personal confession and the weight of betrayal. Fans of Wild Wild Country and Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief will find resonance in its close look at a cult's internal machinery and the courage it takes to leave. Its 2020 to 2022 air years mark the period over which the story was documented, and the series remains a rigorous, emotionally heavy portrait of institutional deception.
