## Synopsis

Maria Wern (2008-present) is a Swedish national-television police procedural series created by Erik Leijonborg and broadcast on TV4, based on the crime novels of Anna Jansson. Crime inspector Maria Wern (Eva Röse) returns to duty at the police department on the island of Gotland and is immediately thrown into a murder investigation. Her husband Emil Wern (Oscar Pettersson) and colleagues such as Arvidsson (Peter Perski) and Ek (Ulf Friberg) work alongside her, while Sebastian (Erik Johansson) and Erika (Tanja Lorentzon) add further pressure to the investigations. The engine of the show is methodical casework on a small island where everyone knows everyone, with each season built around a fresh murder inquiry that pulls Maria's professional instincts against her personal life. Over nine seasons and sixty-two episodes of forty minutes each, the series keeps a steady, measured pace. The tone is melancholic and atmospheric, with cold coastal landscapes, quiet suspicion and grounded violence. Set in present-day Gotland, it sits within the nordic noir tradition, and fans of Wallander, The Killing and Beck will find resonance in its unhurried, character-driven crime storytelling.
