## Synopsis

Arn: The Knight Templar (2010) is a Scandinavian-European co-produced historical drama miniseries based on the novel series by Jan Guillou, broadcast on TV4. Joakim Nätterqvist plays the title knight Arn Magnusson, whose long struggle to reach his beloved Cecilia, played by Sofia Helin, drives the story as he is forced to endure hardship after hardship. Stellan Skarsgård appears as Birger Brosa among the principal figures of the era. Told across six episodes of roughly forty-five minutes each, the miniseries is a single continuing story rather than a case-of-the-week format. Its engine is the tension between personal devotion and the duty owed to crusading orders and church powers, with battlefield violence and political scheming punctuating long stretches of exile and waiting. Set in twelfth century Europe, it moves between the courts, monasteries and war camps of a medieval landscape. The tone is sombre and earnest, with a yearning romantic core and a brooding, austere atmosphere. Fans of Kingdom of Heaven, The Pillars of the Earth and Game of Thrones will find resonance in its blend of crusade spectacle, religious intrigue and devotion tested by hardship.
