## Synopsis

Sidika (1997-2003) is a Turkish national-television family sitcom created by Atilla Atalay for Show TV. Hasibe Eren plays Sıdıka Saka, a young woman raised in a poor Istanbul neighborhood who is not allowed to attend high school, leave the house alone, or do anything but wait for a husband to be chosen for her. Füsun Demirel plays her traditionalist mother Safiye, while Ali Erkazan plays the oppressive, alcoholic father Zekeriya and Hakan Tanfer plays Samim Saka. Her engine is the hunger to learn: she educates herself through books, newspapers and television, and turns that accumulated knowledge into sharp, satirical commentary on the family and on current political and social events in Turkey and the world. Over three seasons and 98 episodes, the show moves at a brisk, witty pace, built around household sparring and the gap between Sidika's inner life and her cramped surroundings. The tone is comic and warm, with a satirical bite and an undercurrent of frustration. Its domestic focus and social observation invite comparison with classic household comedies such as All in the Family and the working-class satire of Al Bundy, and it will appeal to viewers who enjoy witty heroines and family sitcoms with a point of view.
