## Synopsis

1864 (2014) is a Danish national-television war miniseries created by Ole Bornedal and broadcast on DR1. Its eight hour-long episodes follow two brothers, with Pilou Asbæk as Didrich and Bent Mejding as Severin, who are called to serve when Prussia and Austria declare war on Denmark. The engine of the story is the pull between family loyalty and the brutal demands of a military campaign that must hold ground against far larger powers. Supporting roles from Marie Tourell Søderberg as Inge Juel and Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Claudia Henriksen widen the focus beyond the front, into the homes and political stakes left behind. Told as a single continuing arc across one limited season, the series moves between soldiers' lives and the wider national crisis. Set in 1860s Denmark, it is a grounded, earthy period drama with a sober, elegiac tone and an emphasis on human cost. Its Scandinavian production sits within the tradition of Nordic historical drama, and viewers who enjoy Band of Brothers or The Last Kingdom will find similar resonance in its scale and its focus on ordinary people caught in history.
