## Synopsis

Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai (2013-present) is a Japanese anime horror anthology created by ILCA and aired on TV Tokyo and AT-X. Told in the style of kamishibai picture-story theater, each four-minute episode is a self-contained tale drawn from Japanese urban legends, rumors, and folklore, guided by a recurring storyteller voiced by Kanji Tsuda. Across seventeen seasons and more than two hundred tales, the show offers a constant stream of standalone stories rather than one continuing plot. Each segment centers on a curse, a ghost, a demon, or a monster lurking in an everyday setting, and the stark, flat illustrated panels let a single image carry the scare. The register is eerie and unsettling, shifting between quiet dread and sudden grotesque shock, with the supernatural breaking into ordinary life. Fans of Kwaidan, Ghost Stories, and Tales from the Crypt will find resonance in its folkloric chills and anthology structure. The mood is macabre and atmospheric, best suited to a late-night dip into one tale at a time.
