## Synopsis

The Proud Family (2001-2005) is a US animated family sitcom created by Bruce W. Smith for Disney Channel. Its protagonist is fourteen-year-old Penny Proud (voiced by Kyla Pratt), who is trying to get through the early years of teen life while balancing school, friends and home. Her parents Oscar Proud (Tommy Davidson) and Trudy Parker-Proud (Paula Jai Parker) are loving but over-protective, and her hip grandmother Suga Mama (Jo Marie Payton) adds warmth and sly humor to the household. Penny's rival LaCienega Boulevardez (Alisa Reyes) and her sassy friend Dijonay Jones (Karen Malina White) supply most of the friction. Each episode is a self-contained case of everyday school and family mishaps that snowball into bigger than life situations full of hijinks, hilarity and heart. The show runs for three seasons and fifty-two episodes in a familiar sitcom format, set in a contemporary African American neighborhood with a bright, cartoonish look. Its tone is breezy, cozy and affectionate, with a gentle streak of social observation about family and identity. Fans of The Simpsons, Recess and Doug will find resonance here.
