## Synopsis

The European Side (Avrupa Yakası, 2004-2009) is a Turkish national-television family sitcom created by Gülse Birsel for atv. Ninety-minute episodes follow the traditional Sütçüoğlu household as it stumbles through the glossy, status-conscious world of Istanbul's Nisantasi neighborhood. Gazanfer Özcan plays patriarch Tahsin Sütçüoğlu, Hümeyra plays his wife İffet, and Gülse Birsel plays their daughter Aslı, whose modern ambitions collide with her parents' old-fashioned expectations. Around them, Engin Günaydın, Levent Üzümcü and Şenay Gürler add neighbors and in-laws whose social pretensions keep the household off balance. The engine is simple and funny: every new social obligation, from fancy dinners to a bid for prestige, becomes a test of whether the family can keep its dignity intact. Across six seasons and roughly 190 episodes, the show stays a case-of-the-week domestic comedy with a warm, breezy, affectionate tone, mocking class pretension without cruelty. Set in mid-2000s Istanbul, it captures the tension between the old Anatolian values and the new urban middle class. Fans of The Royle Family, Everybody Loves Raymond and Modern Family will find similar resonance in its ensemble warmth and generational comedy.
