## Synopsis

Burning Bush (2013) is a Czech historical drama miniseries created by Agnieszka Holland for HBO Europe. Based on real characters and events, the three-episode limited series follows Prague history student Jan Palach, whose self-immolation in 1969 protested the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia. Tatiana Pauhofová plays young lawyer Dagmar Burešová, who takes on the case of Palach's family in a trial against the communist government, a regime determined to dishonour his sacrifice. Jaroslava Pokorná plays Libuše Palachová, and Martin Huba and Ivan Trojan appear among the principal figures on the state side. The engine of the story is a battle over memory: a lawyer must push through intimidation, surveillance and bureaucratic obstruction while the family fights to keep a heroic act from being rewritten as shame. Each episode is a long, deliberate stretch of courtroom tension, private grief and quiet pressure from the security apparatus. Set in 1969 Prague during the normalization period, the series carries a haunting, austere mood of dread and dignity. Its register is sober and humane rather than sensational. Fans of Chernobyl, The Lives of Others and other serious Eastern bloc political dramas will find strong resonance here.
