## Synopsis

Southcliffe (2013) is a British four-part limited series created by Tony Grisoni and broadcast on Channel 4, a bleak crime drama in the national television tradition of grounded British social drama. Set in a quiet English market town, it follows a raft of shootings that rips through the community. Rory Kinnear plays David Whitehead, whose family life is upended, while Joe Dempsie appears as Chris Cooper and Sean Harris as Stephen Morton, with Shirley Henderson and Eddie Marsan among the other principal figures. Rather than unfolding in order, the crimes are retold in a nonlinear structure through the eyes of a journalist and the victims, so each episode reshapes what the viewer thought they knew. The engine is less whodunit than the slow accumulation of grief, suspicion and small-town silence around the killings. Its tone is sombre, unsettling and intimate, with a steady current of dread that lingers after each hour. Fans of Broadchurch, Happy Valley and The Killing will find resonance in its bleak community focus and its fractured, character-driven approach to violent crime. The series is grim and emotionally heavy, rewarding patient viewers who want drama that dwells on consequences rather than spectacle.
