## Synopsis

Restless (2012) is a British two-part spy miniseries created for BBC One, adapted from a novel. Hayley Atwell plays Eva Delectorskaya, a young woman who discovers that her mother has been living as a fugitive since working for the British Secret Service during World War II. Rufus Sewell plays Lucas Romer, a man whose connection to the past complicates her search, while Michelle Dockery, Michael Gambon and Charlotte Rampling appear in roles that tie the present-day investigation to the wartime years. The engine of the story is a daughter piecing together a hidden identity from fragments, documents and people who may not be what they seem, as every new lead threatens to expose her own past. Across its two ninety-minute episodes the miniseries moves between the present and the war, building a steady dread around who can be trusted. Its tone is tense, melancholic and paranoid, with a restrained period atmosphere of wartime tradecraft, safe houses and cold European cities. Fans of The Americans, Spooks and Bodyguard will find resonance in its layered espionage, its moral ambiguity and its focus on the personal cost of secrets kept for decades.
