## Synopsis

Penal Battalion (2004) is a Russian war drama series created by Eduard Volodarskiy and Nicolay Dostal for Russia-1. Its story follows political prisoners sent to fight on the Soviet fronts of the Great Patriotic War as members of a penalty battalion, where survival is the only goal and every soldier is expendable. Vasilii Tverdokhlebov, played by Aleksey Serebryakov, anchors the ensemble alongside Yuri Stepanov as Antip Glymov and Aleksandr Bashirov as Stirah, men whose pasts and prison records follow them into the trenches. Across eleven episodes of roughly fifty minutes each, the drama is built from the grinding routine of front-line assignments, hostile commanders, shifting loyalties, and the constant threat of combat. The result is a gritty, mournful and unsparing portrait of war, with a tone that is bleak, sincere and visceral. Its atmosphere of mud, fear and dark humor echoes the unflinching realism of Come and See and the unit camaraderie of Band of Brothers, making it a fit for viewers seeking an adult, grounded wartime story set in Soviet Russia during World War II. A single self-contained season completes the story.
