## Synopsis

The World is Still Beautiful (2014) is a Japanese animated shoujo romance fantasy series produced by Pierrot and broadcast on Nippon TV. Nike, the fourth princess of the Principality of Rain who can call forth rain, is sent to the Sun Kingdom to marry Sun King Livius for political reasons, despite her reluctance. She expects a conquering monarch but finds a child, and the engine of the show is the uneasy, often comic negotiation between her duty to her country and her growing bond with a ruler who makes demands that seem trivial. Each of its twelve episodes of roughly twenty-three minutes mixes light adventure with courtly intrigue and slow emotional development, building a single continuing story from a single premise. Its lighthearted, whimsical register rests on a warm and gently teasing romance, and the fantasy kingdom setting gives the world a sense of scale beyond the palace walls. The series comes from a shoujo manga adaptation, and fans of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Spice and Wolf, and The Rising of the Shield Hero will find resonance in its blend of romantic comedy and fantasy adventure.
