## What critics say

Audiences broadly find The Coach a mixed but well-liked Russian sitcom, with steady ratings across its seasons and a warm reception for its comedy and cast.

## Synopsis

The Coach (2014-2017) is a Russian television comedy sitcom created by Sergey Sentsov for TNT. Dmitriy Nagiev plays Oleg Fomin, a retired mobster nicknamed Foma, who tries to climb back into the criminal world by befriending the son of his former boss. To get close to the kid, he must become a physical education teacher at the boy's high school, and his hard-edged habits clash with students and staff. Alexandr Gordon plays Viktor Mamaev, the former boss whose family pulls Foma back into his orbit, while Anastasiya Panina plays the teacher Tatyana Chernyshova, a grounded counterweight to his bluster. Vladimir Sychev plays Foma's unhinged friend Alexei Vereshchagin, and Daniil Vakhrushev plays the mustached Valya Vyalykh. Each episode is a self-contained run of schemes, school-day mishaps and petty rivalries, with a running storyline of criminal ambitions quietly underneath. The show spans four seasons and seventy-seven episodes of roughly twenty-one minutes each. Its tone is brash, sardonic and breezy, with an affectionate streak toward its misfit characters. Fans of Teachers, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Ted Lasso will find a similar mix of workplace comedy and lovable antiheroes.
