## Synopsis

Tokyo Ghoul (2014-2018) is a Japanese animated dark fantasy series produced by Pierrot and broadcast on TOKYO MX, adapted from the manga and running four seasons across 48 episodes. Ken Kaneki, a bookish college student, meets a young woman named Rize and is thrust into a hidden world of ghouls who look human but must eat human flesh to survive. Kaneki wants only to return to his ordinary life, yet the transformation leaves him caught between the ghoul underground and a secret organization that hunts them. Each season builds a tense, violent struggle for survival, with shifting alliances, coffee shop hideouts, and moral compromises that keep the stakes high. The tone is bleak, brooding, and often harrowing, with bloody gore and torture scenes sitting beside quieter moments of friendship and loyalty. The story explores identity, hunger, and what it means to remain human when the body demands monstrous acts. Fans of Parasyte: The Maxim, Attack on Titan, and Berserk (1997) will find similar dark, morally tangled terrain in this shonen-influenced seinen-leaning anime.
