## Synopsis

Jane the Virgin (2014-2019) is a American television adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la virgen, created by Jennie Snyder Urman for The CW. Gina Rodriguez stars as Jane Villanueva, a devoutly raised young woman in Miami who is accidentally impregnated through artificial insemination during a medical mishap. Her protective mother Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) and grandmother Alba (Ivonne Coll) push her toward a careful life, while the father of the baby, Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni), and the childhood love Michael Cordero Jr. (Brett Dier) pull her toward messier choices. The engine of the show is Jane's struggle to tell her family the truth, keep her promises and decide what kind of life she wants, one heightened episode at a time. Each episode is built around new twists, sudden reveals, and the playful intrusions of an omniscient narrator who frames the story like a telenovela. Over five serialized seasons and a hundred episodes, the series balances broad romantic comedy with sincere family melodrama and warm, sun-drenched Miami atmosphere. Fans of Ugly Betty, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Devious Maids will find resonance in its blend of self-aware humor, heightened romance and tender family loyalty, set in the present day.
