## Synopsis

Home Grown (2013-2019) is a Belgian crime comedy series created by Philippe De Schepper for VRT 1, a three-season run of eighteen fifty-minute episodes. Dirk van Dijck plays Jos Welvaert, a local potato farmer who loses his savings and decides to earn it back by growing cannabis on his land. Sebastien Dewaele plays his son Steven, and Rhoda Montemayor plays Julita Pineda, whose presence adds complications to the family operation. Sien Eggers and Maaike Cafmeyer round out the cast as neighbours and associates who get drawn into the scheme. Each season builds on the last, with the illegal enterprise growing more tangled as the family struggles to keep its secret from the village and the authorities. The tone is wry and warm, with deadpan humour that finds the absurdity in amateur criminals working out of a farmhouse. The show is set in contemporary rural Flanders and makes its comedy from ordinary people over their heads. Fans of Breaking Bad, Weeds and Ha Ha Ha Ha will find resonance in its blend of drug trade stakes and domestic comedy.
