## Synopsis

Quirke (2014) is an Irish period crime miniseries created by Andrew Davies for RTÉ One and co-produced with the BBC. Gabriel Byrne plays Quirke, a charismatic loner who serves as chief pathologist in the Dublin city morgue, and his investigations of sudden deaths carry him into the city's hidden corners. Nick Dunning as Malachy Griffin and Michael Gambon as Judge Garret Griffin anchor the powerful family whose secrets surface around the cases, while Brian Gleeson as Sinclair and Stanley Townsend as Inspector Hackett bring the police and criminal threads into the mix. Across a three-episode run of ninety-minute installments, the engine is a pathologist's slow pursuit of the truth behind official explanations, shadowed by a forbidden love with his adoptive brother's wife that has shaped his whole life. The story is a single continuing mystery rather than a case-of-the-week format, and it unfolds in a restrained, smoky atmosphere of guilt, desire and institutional hypocrisy. Fans of The Killing, Mildred Pierce and Happy Valley will find resonance in its melancholic register, moral unease and mid-century setting. Set in 1950s Dublin, the series builds a tense, intimate portrait of a city where Catholic respectability hides damage and private pleasures offer only brief relief.
