## Synopsis

The Empress of China (2014-2015) is a Chinese national-television historical drama series created by Yik Chun Go and broadcast on Hunan Television. Fan Bingbing stars as Wu Meiniang, the ambitious woman who rises from the lower ranks of the Tang dynasty palace toward the highest power in the land, while Zhang Fengyi plays Li Shimin, the emperor whose court she must navigate. Aarif Rahman, Ning Chang and Kathy Chow Hoi-Mei round out the principal cast as rivals, allies and consorts in a shifting web of loyalty and betrayal. Across a single ninety-six episode season, the story is built from court maneuvers, factional scheming, marriages made for advantage and the constant threat of palace danger, with each episode advancing her climb one careful step at a time. The result is a long serialized epic rather than a case of the week, with a steady accumulation of political stakes. Set in seventh and eighth century Tang China, the series unfolds in opulent imperial palaces and the wider dynastic court, carrying a stately, intense and melodramatic tone. Its themes of female ambition, survival and the price of power give it the feel of a classic Asian costume drama. Fans of Legend of Zhen Huan, Dae Jang Geum and The Tudors will find resonance in its palace politics and its determined heroine.
