## Synopsis

Arthur & George (2015) is a British three-part miniseries created by Ed Whitmore for ITV1, adapted from Julian Barnes' novel. Martin Clunes plays Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes, who becomes absorbed in the case of George Edalji, a young Anglo-Indian solicitor played by Arsher Ali. Edalji has been imprisoned for allegedly mutilating animals and writing obscene letters, and Doyle's engine is a determined, methodical campaign to expose the flawed evidence against him. Charles Edwards plays Doyle's trusted secretary Alfred 'Woodie' Wood, and Emma Fielding and Art Malik appear as members of the Edalji family, anchoring the personal stakes. Each of the three feature-length episodes moves through the investigation as a patient, document-driven inquiry through Staffordshire, Hampshire and London. Set in 1906 Edwardian England, the drama carries a measured, melancholic register, weighing reason against prejudice and class. Its tone is restrained and thoughtful rather than flashy. Fans of Prime Suspect, Fingersmith and Sherlock will find resonance in its period atmosphere and its story of a famous mind applied to a real injustice.
