## Synopsis

GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (1998) is a Japanese national-television school comedy-drama created for Fuji TV and Kansai TV. Takashi Sorimachi plays Eikichi Onizuka, a former gang leader who becomes a high school teacher. Nanako Matsushima plays Azusa Fuyutsuki, a fellow teacher, while Naohito Fujiki plays Ryuji Saejima and Yosuke Kubozuka plays Yoshito Kikuchi among the troubled students. The engine of the show is Onizuka's unorthodox campaign to pull a class of students who torment their teachers and classmates toward a healthier adulthood, with their reasons for rebellion gradually surfacing. Each episode mixes outrageous classroom antics, street-smart schemes, and sudden moments of sincerity as he also works to rehabilitate the jaded faculty around him. Set in a contemporary Japanese high school, the twelve-episode run is a single continuous story rather than a case-of-the-week format. The tone is irreverent and boisterous, yet it keeps returning to warmth and earnest feeling. Viewers who enjoy rebellious-teacher stories and school comedies with genuine heart will find resonance here, in the vein of Kinpachi-sensei and Silver Spoon.
