## Synopsis

Anne of Green Gables (1985) is a Canadian period drama miniseries created for CBC Television, adapted from Lucy Maud Montgomery's beloved novel. Megan Follows plays Anne Shirley, an imaginative red-haired orphan whose spirited talk and bold daydreams unsettle the stern but tender Marilla Cuthbert (Colleen Dewhurst) and her gentle brother Matthew (Richard Farnsworth) on their farm. The engine of the story is Anne's struggle to be wanted: she wants a real home, but her enthusiasm keeps getting her into scrapes with the neighbors of Avonlea, and the Cuthberts had actually expected a boy to help with the farm work. Jonathan Crombie appears as the schoolboy Gilbert Blythe, and Schuyler Grant as Diana Barry, Anne's kindred spirit. The two-part, roughly three-hour story moves through school rivalries, friendships, mishaps and small domestic moments that accumulate into a portrait of a community. Set in early 1900s Prince Edward Island, the series has a sun-dappled, nostalgic atmosphere, earnest and warm, with a sincere celebration of childhood imagination. Fans of Little House on the Prairie, Heidi and Cranford will find resonance in its gentle pacing, rural rhythms and affectionate family drama.
