## Synopsis

Barnaby Jones (1973-1980) is an American detective series created by Edward Hume for CBS. Buddy Ebsen stars as Barnaby Jones, a retired investigator who runs a private detective agency in Los Angeles alongside his daughter-in-law Betty Jones, played by Lee Meriwether, while his grandson JR Jones, played by Mark Shera, is also part of the family world. The engine of the show is a fresh case each week, with Barnaby and Betty tracking down suspects, sifting clues and interviewing witnesses until the culprit is exposed. Across eight seasons and 178 episodes it works as a classic case-of-the-week procedural rather than a serialized saga, with each hour built around a single crime. The tone is steady and comforting, with a patient, unhurried rhythm and warm family dynamics anchoring the investigations. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, it reflects the network crime drama tradition of its era. Fans of Columbo, Cannon and Magnum, P.I. will find much of the same appeal in its private eye premise and gentle mystery-solving.
