## Synopsis

Pandora's Box (1992) is a British documentary limited series created by Adam Curtis for BBC Two. Across six 55-minute episodes, Curtis narrates his own essayistic argument over archival footage, following a single thread about what happens when political and technocratic rationalism is pushed too far. The episodes move through the Soviet Union's communist project, the systems analysis and game theory developed during the Cold War, the British economy of the 1970s, the insecticide DDT, Kwame Nkrumah's leadership in Ghana during the 1950s and 1960s, and the history of nuclear power. Each hour builds a chain of cause and consequence rather than a chronology of events, asking how confident planners and experts reshaped lives and then failed the people they governed. The tone is sardonic, skeptical and sober, with a dry authorial voice cutting between grainy newsreel, official films and reflective commentary. Fans of Curtis's later essay series such as The Century of the Self and The Power of Nightmares will find the same method here: a documentary that reads like an argument, drawing its force from juxtaposition and the unsettling persistence of ideas that promised order. Viewers who like history told as critique will find it a dense, rewarding watch.
