## What critics say

Critics broadly regard FLCL as a bold, idiosyncratic anime whose striking animation and coming-of-age heart outweigh its bizarre, episodic surface.

## Synopsis

FLCL is a Japanese animated surreal comedy that plays like a restless, hyperactive dream about growing up. Naota, an ordinary teenage boy in a sleepy seaside town, has a life built around stillness and routine until Haruhara Haruko, a wild, rollerblading force of nature, crashes into his world and turns it upside down. Each episode piles up bizarre, escalating events: mechanical giants erupting from heads, strange invaders, and absurd confrontations that refuse to explain themselves. Beneath the chaos sits a simple emotional engine, a boy who wants to be left alone against a world that keeps pushing him to become an adult. The tone shifts between playful, wistful, and quietly bittersweet, with psychedelic, kinetic animation and an indie rock soundtrack driving the energy. Its absurdist parody and postmodern wit recall Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gravity Falls, but the show's core is intimate: a brisk, bold coming of age experience that rewards viewers who enjoy surreal, idiosyncratic storytelling and don't need every mystery resolved.
