## Synopsis

Old Money (2015) is an Austrian national-television dark comedy miniseries created by David Schalko for ORF 1. Udo Kier plays Rolf Rauchensteiner, the patriarch of a wealthy Viennese family who is dying and in need of a liver, and who has promised his fortune to whichever of his heirs will donate one. Sunnyi Melles plays his wife Liane, Nicholas Ofczarek plays the scheming Zeno, and Manuel Rubey and Nora Waldstätten play the younger Rauchensteiner children, each angling for the inheritance. Their rivalries and private bargains play out across eight single-season episodes. Each installment peels back another layer of pretension, favoritism and resentment, as ordinary middle-class figures are pulled into the family's orbit. The tone is acidic and mordant, with bleak laughs at the vanity of the rich and a melancholic undercurrent of kinship reduced to a transaction. Set in present-day Vienna, the series suits viewers who enjoy caustic European satire. Fans of Succession, Arrested Development and Buddenbrooks will find resonance in its portrait of a dynasty devouring itself over money.
