## Synopsis

Sankarea: Undying Love (2012) is a Japanese anime comedy horror series created for TBS and produced by Studio Deen, based on a manga. Zombie-obsessed teenager Furuya (voiced by Ryohei Kimura) is brewing a potion to revive his dead cat when he meets Rea (voiced by Maaya Uchida), a miserable girl trapped under her creepy, domineering father, Dan'ichirō Sanka (voiced by Unsho Ishizuka). After she drinks his elixir in a suicide attempt, she returns as an undead girl who begins to live for the first time. Furuya hides her away and tries to keep his ghoulfriend safe while her body decays and her father hunts for her. The engine of each episode is the awkward, ever-tightening bond between Furuya and Rea, balanced against the threat of her family reclaiming her. The twelve-episode run is one continuing story set in a present-day Japanese town. Its tone is macabre yet tender, mixing dark comedy with melancholic sincerity about being alive. Fans of Highschool of the Dead and Shiki will find resonance in its mix of zombie horror, romance, and bleak humor, a show that treats mortality with a gentle, wry touch.
